Saint-Philippe - Sowing for the future
Saint-Philippe is a town with a rural character where urbanity rubs shoulders with rurality. Located in the Montérégie region near Candiac and Delson, the town is crisscrossed by the Saint-Jacques River and bordered by highways 15 (from Montreal to the United States) and 30 (from Salaberry-de-Valleyfield to Sorel-Tracy). Its territory covers 62 square kilometers, 93% of which is in agricultural zones.
Origins dating back to the 17th century
It was in 1667 that the first families settled: "these courageous pioneers", as mentioned by Monseigneur de Pontbriand, Bishop of Quebec. In 1744, the first parish of Saint-Philippe was founded: the Fabrique de la côte Saint-Philippe.
During the 19th century, it obtained (1845), then lost (1847) its name and its status of Municipality of the Parish of Saint-Philippe, only to regain it (1855) following the adoption of the "Act to make better provision for the establishment of municipal authorities in Lower Canada". It was this act that established the basis for the municipal system in effect today in Quebec. On October 22, 2016, the Municipality of Saint-Philippe will change its status to become the Town of Saint-Philippe.
In January 2020, it celebrated 275 years of existence. During the festivities, the city received a medal from the National Assembly in recognition of its history.
Demographic profile of Saint-Philippe
In recent years, the city has experienced one of the strongest demographic growths in Quebec, in the order of 15% between 2011 and 2016. Its population was 7,317 citizens in 2020 and, according to the city hall, it should reach 13,000 citizens by 2031.
According to City Hall, within the next few years, the City of St Philippe will be home to a new wastewater treatment plant and the extension of the sewer and water systems. This will support new residential development planned for the revitalized site of the existing aerated ponds at the end of Jean Street. This program is designed to support the City's population growth while stimulating economic growth.
Although only minutes away from Montreal, Brossard, Longueuil, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Chateauguay, Saint-Philippe relies on several local businesses and professional centers to serve local residents.
It has two pharmacies, several food markets, a wholesale frozen food store, a specialty fruit and vegetable store, a candy store, several auto and motorcycle repair and maintenance garages, gas stations, auto dealerships, a clothing store, a hardware store and more. There is a men's hair salon and a women's hair salon offering a wide variety of body treatments. Banks and credit unions are located in nearby urban centers.
The return of the public market in Saint-Philippe
Every Thursday, from August 5 to September 23 (dates to be confirmed for 2022), between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., the City of Saint-Philippe will present a new edition of the public market, which will take place in the parking lot of the Complexe Élodie-P. Babin at 2235 Édouard-VII Road. This event will showcase local and regional artisans who will offer you an opportunity to buy fresh food and encourage local purchases and local agriculture.

Collège Durocher Saint-Lambert, in collaboration with the Centre Équestre le Pré Vert, is pleased to offer students the option of horseback riding as part of its sports studies program.
Parks and green spaces
The city offers several recreational sites where users can enjoy recreational facilities. The department maintains the parks and green spaces by inspecting and maintaining the playgrounds and sports fields, collecting garbage, maintaining the lawn, trails and ice surfaces, pruning trees and maintaining street furniture (benches, tables, etc.).
There are the Gérard-Laframboise, Anatole-Lussier, Jean-Paul Dupuis, Raoul-Lavallée, Parc aux Oiseaux, Hervé-Perrier, des Aubépines and Monette parks, as well as cross-country ski and snowshoe trails (snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals available).
